This review applies to version 11.2 The latest version of this software will soon be reviewed by our informers.

Arasan, developed by Jon Dart, is a free and straightforward computer version of the classic Chess. According to the developer, Arasan has been designed to be an strong and challenging opponent, so beating the computer will be a real challenge.

The game's interface has a simple design, and offers a number of features to adapt the game according to your preferences. For example, the main window is resizable; you can change it to any of the four sizes available: Small, Medium, Large, and Extra Large. Besides, it’s possible to change the board colors and choose one from five piece styles. You can save a current game or a board position to continue playing later. And, while playing, you can ask the program for a hint on a possible move. It includes an opening book with more than 100,000 moves.

If you feel that the level the computer is playing at is impossible to beat it, then, by changing some parameters at the Search Limits in the Option Menu, you can adapt the computer level. Arasan is freeware and works in Windows, Linux and Mac Operating Systems.
Advantages
  • Customizable.
  • Freeware.
